Benefits of Evening Primrose Oil

Supporting healthy skin and joint function, and women's hormones

Historically cultivated and used for its nutrient-rich and delicious roots, the Evening Primrose plant is fully edible. Its flowers may be added to salads, its leaves used as greens and its roots a sweet substitute for potatoes. But it’s the oil in the seeds of this plant that yield a rich Omega 6 Fatty Acid known as GLA. While GLA is found in many plant oils, Evening Primrose Oil is one of the richest sources in nature.

Our body cannot produce Omega 6, we need to get it from our diets. Research into the benefits of GLA supplementation is ongoing and so far studies show that supplementation with GLA may assist in maintaining healthy skin and joints, and also assist in supporting healthy hormone levels in women, which may benefit their menstrual health.

Studies on the effects of Evening Primrose Oil supplementation on skin health has yielded mixed results. There is strong evidence to suggest that supplementation improves various aspects of skin health such as skin moisture, elasticity, firmness, fatigue resistance, roughness and reduces epidermal water loss. However studies into other aspects of skin health are yet to show significant results.

Studies on the effects of Evening Primrose Oil on various aspects of joint health have yielded mixed results, but research in this area is constantly emerging. Supplementation with GLA appears to support healthy immune function associated with joint health, and also improves joint antioxidant status. Emerging research indicates that GLA combined with Omega 3 Fish Oil may significantly improve joint health and function. More research is required in this area.

What quality means to us

1.We start with the science.

The first marker of quality is effectiveness. That’s why we follow an evidence-based approach to nutrition. Unless there is scientific research supporting a nutrient it won’t be included in our recommendations. Research is also clearly categorised as mixed, emerging, strong, very strong or traditionally used remedies.

2.We know our place.

Usually the best way to get the best nutrients is in food. Real food. So we will never advocate vitamins or minerals as a replacement to a balanced diet. Where they have a key role is when, for whatever reason, your daily diet is not delivering what you need.

3.We're transparent.

Nutrition can be very confusing, with many voices & opinions. A quality outcome is about being able to make informed decisions. That’s why you can drill down on each nutrient to find out exactly why it has been recommended, its form, its bio-availability, dose & detailed ingredients.

4.We are multi-source.

You’ll find that our range changes. If the research indicates that the best form of nutrient comes via a particular extraction process or from a new part of the world then that is where we will seek to source those nutrients. As new research or technology emerges we constantly refine which nutrients sit at the heart of each personalised recommendation.
