Benefits of Astaxanthin

A powerful antioxidant supporting cardiovascular, brain, immune and skin health

Astaxanthin is emerging as a highly valuable antioxidant that may benefit almost all areas of our health. Astaxanthin belongs to a class of antioxidants called Carotenoids and is very similar to the Beta-Carotene that gives carrots their deep orange colour. However, unlike Beta-Carotene, Astaxantin is not converted to Vitamin A, making it a superior extract for long-term use. There is currently emerging research to indicate that it may support cardiovascular, brain and skin health. There is also emerging research showing the widespread benefits of this compound in supporting immune health.

Astaxanthin has been investigated for its antioxidant effects in maintaining healthy cardiovascular function. To date, there is weak evidence supporting its role in this area. This is possibly due the variability of the source and quality of the Astaxanthin used in the studies. Although new studies are rapidly emerging, more studies are needed in this area.

Astaxanthin is a unique antioxidant supplement due to its ability to position its active carotenoid molecules in the membranes of cells and in circulating lipoproteins. This gives cells potent immune and antioxidant support. New research is rapidly emerging on the immune supporting effects of Astaxanthin, in many areas of the body.

Emerging research on Astaxanthin in exercise support and recovery, indicates its powerful role reducing oxidative stress in muscle, but in terms of energy and endurance enhancement, results have been mixed. It's positive effects on muscle function appear to be due to its antioxidant properties. Further research in this area is required.

What quality means to us

1.We start with the science.

The first marker of quality is effectiveness. That’s why we follow an evidence-based approach to nutrition. Unless there is scientific research supporting a nutrient it won’t be included in our recommendations. Research is also clearly categorised as mixed, emerging, strong, very strong or traditionally used remedies.

2.We know our place.

Usually the best way to get the best nutrients is in food. Real food. So we will never advocate vitamins or minerals as a replacement to a balanced diet. Where they have a key role is when, for whatever reason, your daily diet is not delivering what you need.

3.We're transparent.

Nutrition can be very confusing, with many voices & opinions. A quality outcome is about being able to make informed decisions. That’s why you can drill down on each nutrient to find out exactly why it has been recommended, its form, its bio-availability, dose & detailed ingredients.

4.We are multi-source.

You’ll find that our range changes. If the research indicates that the best form of nutrient comes via a particular extraction process or from a new part of the world then that is where we will seek to source those nutrients. As new research or technology emerges we constantly refine which nutrients sit at the heart of each personalised recommendation.
